What is a Makerspace?

A makerspace is a place where students gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials. The goal of a makerspace is to make things!

Makerspaces encourage creativity and curiosity. In the open-ended atmosphere of a makerspace, learning unfolds based on student interests and questions. The culture of a makerspace supports the idea that anything is possible! The space provides a collaborative learning environment where kids work together on self-directed projects that open the door to science, engineering, craft and design.

RANGE VIEW MAKERSPACE

Posted September 16, 2015

The Range View makerspace is located in our library media center. We have gathered a variety of design and tinkering materials for our makerspace with assistance from The Community Foundation Littler Youth Fund Teacher Mini Grant program. The items include (but are not limited to!) sewing machines, hand tools, building supplies, electronic circuit kits, construction kits (like ZomeTools and Keva Planks), iPad apps, and other technology.

Our makerspace will be open after school on Wednesdays from 2:50 – 4:00pm. Students in grades 3-5 can apply to join our makerspace by completing an application. There will be three makerspace sessions throughout the year, each focusing on a different type of “making.” Small groups of 10 students will be selected for each makerspace session. The makerspace program is completely FREE for students!
